Person to Person
Location: Bartos Screening Room
Presented in 35mm
Dir. Dustin Guy Defa. 2017. 84 mins. 35mm. With Abbi Jacobson, Michael Cera, Tavi Gevinson, Bene Coopersmith, George Sample III, Philip Baker Hall, Isiah Whitlock Jr. During a single day in New York, a variety of characters grapple with the mundane, the unexpected, and the larger questions reverberating through their lives. A record collector hustles for a big score while his heartbroken roommate tries to erase a terrible mistake; a teenager bears witness to her best friend’s new relationship; and a rookie reporter, alongside her overeager supervisor, tries to land a scoop on what might be a murder case. Shot entirely in New York on 16mm, and energized by a soundtrack of deep-cut soul music, Person to Person has a boundless generosity of spirit, effortlessly humanizing its characters and privileging moments of sincere friendship and earnest expression. Cera and Jacobson form a dream comedy team, but the revelation is Coopersmith, a real life record store owner who’s also a one-of-a-kind, made-in-New York movie star.
