Three Colors: Red (Trois Couleurs: Rouge)

En curso

Dir. Krzysztof Kieslowski. 1994, 95 mins. 35mm. With Irene Jacob, Jean-Louis Trintignant, Frederique Feder, Jean-Pierre Lorit, Samuel Leginan. Kieslowski closes his trilogy in grand fashion, with an incandescent meditation on fate and chance starring Irene Jacob as a sweet-souled yet somber runway model in Geneva whose life intersects with that of a bitter retired judge, played by Jean-Louis Trintignant. Meanwhile, just down the street, a seemingly unrelated story of jealousy and betrayal unfolds. Red is an intimate look at forged connections and a bracing final statement from a filmmaker at the height of his powers.

Made during the dawn of the formation of the European Union, the Three Colors feature films work separately and as a trilogy, exploring everyday contemporary implications of the French Revolution’s three concepts, as represented on the country’s French flag: Liberty (Blue), Equality (White), and Fraternity (Red). “When you deal with these ideas practically, you do not know how to live with them. Do people really want liberty, equality, fraternity?” (Krzysztof Kieslowski)
