EVENT, SCREENING

Samuel Beckett’s Film and Ross Lipman’s Notfilm

Ongoing

With Ross Lipman in person

Film (Dir. Samuel Beckett, 1965, 22 mins. Digital projection. With Buster Keaton)

Notfilm (Dir. Ross Lipman, 2015, 128 mins. Digital projection.)

The 1964 collaboration on a short avant-garde film (simply titled Film) between Buster Keaton and Samuel Beckett was an artistic pairing that was as fitting as it was improbable. Beckett, best known for his classic play Waiting For Godot, and Keaton, who was in his waning years, were great artists who shared a certain deadpan existential sensibility. Archivist/filmmaker Ross Lipman’s Notfilm is an astonishing, treasure-filled, and thought-provoking documentary essay, the result of seven years of research that uncovered rare audio recordings of Beckett, cinematographer Boris Kaufman, and footage of unrealized sections of the film. This special event will include a recently restored screening of the Beckett film, and an introduction by Lipman followed by a screening of Notfilm.
