Dir. David Cronenberg. U.S., 1986, 96 mins. 35mm. With Jeff Goldblum, Geena Davis, John Getz. Body horror maestro Cronenberg’s fascination with the limits and possibilities of the flesh, the potentials of technology and science, and humans reaching for godlike power hit its watershed with this horror romance. Released only a year after Reagan first bothered to publicly name the ongoing AIDS epidemic, Cronenberg’s reworking of George Langelaan’s 1957 short story—which had first been adapted in 1958—felt timely both because of its focus on a scientist (Goldblum) on the precipice of important discovery and in its dramatization of a man whose body and being were changing but whose love from his partner (Davis) was not. For Cronenberg, the threshold of the body is not its materiality, but rather its ability to be cared for by another, something that thousands of people were experiencing firsthand during the AIDS epidemic.
