The Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse

Location la: Redstone Theater

The Saturday screening will feature live piano accompaniment by Makia Matsumura.

Dir. Rex Ingram. 1921, 156 mins. 35mm. With Pomeroy Cannon, Josef Swickard, Bridgetta Clark, Rudolph Valentino, Wallace Beery, Alice Terry. Ingram’s adaptation of Vicente Blasco Ibáñez’s 1916 bestseller is remembered today mostly for having made Rudolph Valentino a national superstar. But it’s still one of cinema’s grandest and most powerful antiwar statements. Centered around the Madariaga clan, a landed Argentine family whose scions ultimately find themselves on opposite sides of the Great War, the epic narrative comes to life through the incandescent energy of Valentino’s performance and the pioneering cinematography of John F. Seitz, whose feathery lighting schemes practically invented the “soft style” that would hold sway for the ensuing decade.
