Dir. Ulrich Köhler. 2002, 85 mins. In German with English subtitles. With Lennie Burmeister, Devid Striesow, Trine Dyrholm. The debut film by Ulrich Köhler (In My Room, which opened at MoMI in 2019) is a mesmerizing portrait of a young German soldier, Paul, who goes AWOL and returns to his childhood home in the countryside. Over a few summer days, Paul evades everyday responsibilities and falls in love with his brother’s girlfriend, disrupting the lives of everyone in his circle. Featuring Köhler’s trademark deadpan humor and performances, Bungalow mockingly interrogates militarism, familial estrangement, and youthful ennui, and is a major work of the celebrated contemporary German cinematic movement known as the Berlin School.
